We’re spending the next month or so profiling the comics in the St. Louis scene. We’ll be covering a range of comics from seasoned pros, to open mic comics booking their first shows. Our goal is to give you a glimpse at who you can expect to see, no matter where you experience live comedy.
A past winner of both Helium Comedy’s “Funniest Person in St. Louis” and the Funny Bone’s annual comedy contest, Nathan Orton recently moved from St. Louis to New York.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PERFORMING STAND UP?
DESCRIBE YOUR MATERIAL/STYLE OF PERFORMING TO SOMEONE WHO HASN’T SEEN YOU
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST EXCITING THING, PERSONALLY, THIS YEAR, ABOUT STAND UP?
I recorded myself auditioning for JFL and, upon listening to the recording, I could hear the other comics laughing at my jokes. It made me feel validated as a writer, which is something I’m self-conscious about. Three days after that I won a stand-up contest in Indianapolis. More validation!
Also, I’m a competitive person so I need to win stuff or I get sad. Super not healthy.
CURRENTLY, WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU ARE WORKING TO OVERCOME, IN STAND UP COMEDY?
Coming up with material is a constant source of anxiety.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST COMEDY GOAL FOR THE NEXT YEAR?
To get on stage 1,000 times in my first year in NYC. It’s going to be open mic boot camp.
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WISH YOU’D KNOWN BEFORE YOU STARTED PERFORMING?
Take an acting class and write every single day. Record every set and review it within that week so you don’t get backed up. Set weekly writing goals.
IF YOU WERE A BEVERAGE, WHAT WOULD YOU BE?
Water with a slightly higher pH. There is no reason but I would like to think that I’m non-acidic.
PICK ANY HORROR MOVIE. HOW WOULD YOU SURVIVE?
Midsommer. I wouldn’t have gone to that creepy, goofy ass festival.
DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO PROMOTE?
One day this will be where I want it… I’m trying. Visit my website https://www.nathanortoncomedy.com/
