2019 St. Louis Comedy Profile: Tom Shelton

We’re spending the next month or so profiling the comics in the St. Louis scene. We’ll be covering a range of comics from seasoned pros, to open mic comics booking their first shows. Our goal is to give you a glimpse at who you can expect to see, no matter where you experience live comedy.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PERFORMING STAND UP?

Since I could talk.

Seriously, in 6th grade we had to give a 3 minute speech every week. The last one of the year we could pick anything we anted to talk about and I did a monologue. My closer was, “It isn’t school I’m against, it’s the principal of the thing!” I first did Open Mic night at the St. Louis Funny Bone over 25 years ago. But I would go on week and not go out again for a year or so.

Been at it seriously about 8 years. (Yes, I should be funnier by now.)

DESCRIBE YOUR MATERIAL/STYLE OF PERFORMING TO SOMEONE WHO HASN’T SEEN YOU

Is this stuff really happening out there? Trying to let people know they are not alone in realizing the world is indeed going crazy!

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST EXCITING THING, PERSONALLY, THIS YEAR, ABOUT STAND UP?

When someone very different than me (race, age, etc.) comes up and says they enjoyed my set.

CURRENTLY, WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU ARE WORKING TO OVERCOME, IN STAND UP COMEDY?

Interacting with the audience more – rather than just doing my material.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST COMEDY GOAL FOR THE NEXT YEAR?

To build a solid feature set (20-30 minutes).

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WISH YOU’D KNOWN BEFORE YOU STARTED PERFORMING?

One show is simply one show. You get a chance to do it better the next time you get on stage.

IF YOU WERE A BEVERAGE, WHAT WOULD YOU BE?

I would love to be 1 percent milk. Only 1 percent fat? Are you kidding me?

PICK ANY HORROR MOVIE. HOW WOULD YOU SURVIVE?

Frankenstein. Run away and not fall down.

DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO PROMOTE?

I’ll be featuring for Joe Marlotti at The Funny Bone October 23 through October 27.
